Het programma NeurolabNL: Optimale condities voor leren en veiligheid van jongeren maakt gebruik van kennis over gedrag en hersenen om beter te begrijpen hoe jongeren nieuwe kennis en vaardigheden leren, omgaan met uitdagingen in de maatschappij en hoe ze zich optimaal kunnen ontwikkelen. Project description
In this project you will investigate how the willingness to invest effort affects reinforcement learning. You will do so in a set of behavioural and fMRI studies in which you investigate the effects of 1) age (children, adolescents, adults) and educational level; 2) state, e.g. the amount of sleep; and 3) motivation, e.g. by inducing a growth instead of fixed mindset or by inducing a sense of autonomy. An important aim of the project is to generate knowledge and tools that can be applied in educational practice.

  • The project is a cooperation between the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Lydia Krabbendam), Leiden University (Anna van Duijvenvoorde) and the University of Amsterdam (Hilde Huizenga);
  • the project is embedded in the psychology research institute. The Department of Psychology is internationally renowned for its high quality research, with #11 in the QS psychology world ranking, the highest of continental Europe;

Requirements

• have completed a research master (or expected graduation within 3 months) with a focus on neuroimaging, developmental or educational research;

Appointment
The full-time appointment will be for a period of 12 months plus a further 36 months contingent on a satisfactory performance during the first year.
The gross monthly salary will range from €2,222 in the first year to €2,840 in the final year, based on a full-time position of 38 hours per week. The annual salary will be increased by 8 % holiday allowance and a 8,3 % end-of-year bonus, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

Job description

The Department of Experimental and Applied Psychology is offering two 4-year PhD projects on visual attention (subject to one year probationary period). You will be working in the team led by Professor Chris Olivers. One project focuses on fMRI techniques to determine the relationship between population receptive field size and visual search behaviour, in collaboration with the SPINOZA imaging centre directed by Professor Serge Dumoulin. The other project focuses on EEG techniques to uncover the bottom-up and top-down signals for peripheral vision. You will be part of a diverse, supportive, and internationally renowned group of researchers investigating multiple aspects of visual attention and memory, using a range of advanced techniques. Tasks

• The PhD student will conduct, under supervision, research into the relationship between, and the mechanisms behind, peripheral vision and attention in visual search.
• The PhD student will learn state of the art techniques, and follow necessary courses within local and national graduate schools.
• Promote team work with researchers working on similar projects.
• Present at national and international conferences
• Write high standard international peer-reviewed publications, as well as a PhD thesis complying with university standards.

Requirements

• An MSc degree in cognitive psychology, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, biomedical sciences or related field, with a *demonstrable* interest in psychophysics and/or the (electro)physiology of the visual system.
• Demonstrable technical skills, including proficient programming. Experience with packages like Matlab/R/Python is an advantage. For the EEG project, EEG or MEG experience is an advantage (but not required).
• Proficient English writing and presentation skills.
• Ability to work in a multidisciplinary research team.

Job description

The faculty board and the psychology department at the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences have drawn up an investment programme directed at intensifying and innovating teaching, especially in the bachelor Psychology. To this end, we intend to appoint a total of eight assistant professors with a special interest in teaching, but also with an excellent record in research. The successful candidates teach and coordinate courses in Psychology, supervise bachelor- and master- students, and play an active role in implementing new developments in the Psychology department’s teaching programme. In particular, they will be involved in the ongoing development of activating and intensifying teaching and learning in the bachelor programme. The assistant professors will perform these tasks in close cooperation with other staff members, including the Director of Education.

Within the psychology department, there are 9 expertise groups. These groups share responsibility for teaching in both the English and Dutch Bachelor of Science Psychology degree programmes, as well as in the  11 Master of Science degree programmes of psychology. All expertise groups are part of the Heymans Institute of psychological research (HI) which mission is to conduct ground breaking and impactful research in the main fields of psychology.

Positions are open in all fields of psychology, whereby we strive to hire assistant professors with teaching and research experience that fits into the following expertise groups: (1) clinical psychology, (2) clinical neuropsychology, (3) developmental psychology, (4) social psychology (5) organizational psychology, (6) experimental psychology, (7) theory and history of psychology, and (8) environmental psychology. Qualifications

Conditions of employment

Het Language in Interaction consortium is op zoek naar twee Research Assistants. Deze posities bieden de mogelijkheid voor het uitvoeren van onderzoek binnen een interdisciplinair team van wereldklasse.

Werkomgeving

Binnen ons consortium zijn vijf “Big Questions” (BQs) gedefinieerd die centraal staan in ons begrip van het menselijk taalvermogen. Teams van onderzoekers zullen samenwerken om gezamenlijk deze belangrijke vragen binnen ons vakgebied te beantwoorden

Big Question 4 is gericht op variabiliteit in taalverwerking en in het leren van talen: Waarom wordt het vermogen om een taal te leren beïnvloed door leeftijd? Hoe kunnen we individuele taalvaardigheid karakteriseren en in kaart brengen in relatie tot de populatieverdeling?

Big Question 4 bestaat uit twee onderdelen:
Deel A richt zich op vaardigheden in taalverwerking bij jonge volwassenen, terwijl deel B zich richt op vaardigheid in het leren van taal bij kinderen en volwassenen. Deel A zal een uitgebreid pakket aan taaltaken ontwikkelen gericht op klank, betekenis, en grammaticale verwerking van woorden en langere uitingen tijdens het spreken en luisteren. Daarnaast zullen taken worden geselecteerd of ontwikkeld voor de evaluatie van algemene cognitieve vaardigheden die naar alle waarschijnlijkheid de prestatie op taaltaken beïnvloeden. Deel B maakt gebruik van variabiliteit in het leervermogen om te onderzoeken waarom het verwerven van een tweede taal (L2) moeilijker kan worden op volwassen leeftijd.

Werkzaamheden

Je zult voornamelijk werken aan deel A van Big Question 4. Je zult betrokken zijn bij de ontwikkeling van test items (bijvoorbeeld ontwikkelen stimuli, aanpassen van Engelse testen voor gebruik in het Nederlands, voorbereiden van de test items in bestaande softwarepakketten), data-analyse en -archivering. Je belangrijkste taak zal echter zijn om deelnemers aan het onderzoek in te plannen en te testen in het laboratorium in Nijmegen en op scholen op diverse locaties in Nederland. Wij verwachten

  • Je moet beschikken over een BA-diploma of deze binnenkort behalen (universiteit of hogeschool) in de psychologie, taalwetenschap, (speciaal) onderwijs, logopedie, of in een ander relevant vakgebied.
  • Het belangrijkste is dat je goede communicatieve en organisatorische vaardigheden hebt en je comfortabel voelt in interactie met jonge mensen, zowel individueel als in een groep.
  • Je moet native of near-native kennis van het Nederlands hebben en een goede kennis van het Engels.
  • Goede IT-vaardigheden worden zeer gewaardeerd.
  • Enige ervaring in het onderwijs, met therapie of het geven van begeleiding zou nuttig zijn.

• in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
• you will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 30 months;
• the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of Dutch Universities is applicable;
• you will be classified as Researcher, level 3 in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO);
• the Dutch universities and institutes involved have a number of regulations that enable employees to create a good work-life balance.
